Charlie and Helen Calnan, (aunt and uncle of Joe Calnan the present owner), established Calnan’s in 1948. Charlie started by selling religious goods out of the trunk of his car.

By 1951 they were able to purchase the present store, which then housed a lending library, bakery, and card game room.  They also operated a store on West Broadway next to Pobers. The East Broadway store has been in continuous operation by the same family for over 60 years

Their inventory is vast including Hallmark cards, Yankee candles, and seasonal gifts.  Irish imports are a specialty.  Shandon Scally caps, Irish knit sweaters, from infant to adult sizes, and the best selection of handmade Irish jewelry this side of the Atlantic are but some of the Celtic treasures Calnan’s carries.

Master Watchmaker and jeweler

In addition, Joe is a master watchmaker and jeweler having trained and taught at the North Bennett Street School in the North End.  He will not only design a custom piece but also repair or appraise an heirloom. Joe, along with his wife Kirstin, is committed to the South Boston community.  Their generosity to all local charities is well known.  They are models of community involvement.

There is no need to go to the Plaza.

You can get shower, wedding and anniversary gifts, gifts for First Communion and Confirmation, baby gifts and jewelry for that special occasion right on East Broadway.  Gift certificates are also available.
