1.8 min readBy Published On: January 10th, 2018Categories: News22 Comments on Time’s Up: Space Savers!

We have to admit, 48 hours goes by so quickly.  72 would be delightful but 48 is reasonable and we have to accept that it’s time to say goodbye to our spot saver – a nice, sturdy, orange parking cone.  Goodbye, cone!  We loved having your marking our space and having access to luxurious parking right out in front of our house.  You made picking up and dropping off kids easier, running to the supermarket a snap, and the overall quality of life of South Boston a dream.  We will put our orange cone in our yard until the next storm.  We don’t want to take advantage.  But some of our Southie neighbors are doing that….taking advantage.

As of Wednesday morning, people on our block still have them out.  Maybe they are just trying to get one over on their neighbors.  If someone moves the space saver, well it was worth the try, right?  They aren’t going to retaliate or leave a threatening note.  The 48 hours are up and have been since Sunday afternoon at 5pm.

Well, this Thomas Park resident still feels entitled to his/her spot.

To the author we say, “Hey! You are wrong!  Give up your space saver. It’s over.  You’re not a good neighbor.  By you taking advantage or the system and leaving a threatening note, you’re ruining the system we have with the mayor that 48 hours is long enough.  By threatening violence, (two additional days after space savers were suppose to be removed) you’re adding fuel to the “let’s just ban space savers all together” fire.  We get it.  You want to keep your spot.  We all do.”

Come on Southie!  We’re better than this!  This is the first snowstorm of 2018 – we still have 2 more long months of winter left.  48 hours of enjoy our own person spot on the street is all we have.  If we keep up this type of nonsense,  we’ll end up like the South End – the land of banned space savers.

Remember we are all in this together!  Let’s be kind to one another.  Take the Good Neighbor Pledge.

So what are the rules regarding space savers that would have value to you if you were to take them from the spot they are now wrongly saving? Is it stealing or is the space saver now considered free, left goods?

I saw some half decent lawn chairs being used. Can never have enough lawn chairs.

Maybe he’s the guy with the red pick up that drove around and stole hundreds of beach chairs 3 years ago…

According to Mayor Walsh, space savers are considered trash once the allotted time for them has passed. Took it upon myself to look that one up. Did the person that did that wait for the 48 hour rule to pass? Because in that case he was just being a good citizen picking up all the “trash” people left behind.

I think this abuse of the space saver system, along with acts and/or threats of retaliation, will only continue until the space saver “rules” are actually enforced consistently.

Honestly i think there is an argument for continuing to put them out.

Typically the people who want to keep their spots longer are the ones who spent a long time cleaning up their spot.

The ones who want space savors gone are the ones who drive out of a snowy mess. Every snowy mess that isn’t cleaned up reduces the amount of parking spaces. So theoretically we shouldn’t give in to the dirt bags who don’t clean up their spots, because once we do we are looking at an already overly crowded neighborhood with now much less spots to park.

Easy to spot the dirt bags, their the ones with snow covering their hood and back windshield days after the storm.

Ahhh Ed, I love your spunk but I believe it was Japan that bombed Pearl Harbor, Not Germany.

And I agree with you that we should keep our space savers until it’s over. We didn’t shovel it out so some outside yuppie that has his arms filled carrying his cute puppy can come along and park in it.

If you want a dedicated space, then rent one or buy one. It is a public road with public’ parking. If I travel for work and need to be out of town the day of a storm should I lose the right to public parking? I did not grow up here and I can say for sure this is the most abhorrent tradition I have seen in Boston.

    • Yuppie Hater January 26, 2018 at 3:38 pm - Reply

Well why don’t you go back to where you grew up? We don’t want you here anyway!!!!!!

There’s no chains on your yuppie ass, if you don’t like our traditions take a hike.
