Written by Betsy Walsh Frissora

New and exciting developments continue to pop-up allover Southie, bringing more residential units, industry, recreation, business and residents to the area.  The streets and areas that are developing at the fastest pace are the streets that either border or serve as main connector streets to the Seaport and Innovation District (surprise, surprise!)  Particularly, the streets that fall into this category are D Street, 1st Street, and Summer Street.   That being said, various development plans for 1st Street have been put in motion, and could transform the entire street.  One of the current projects that was already BRA Board Approved is on 621 East 1st Street, at the corner of 1st Street and Summer Street (both a connector and border street to the Seaport).

The new development at 621 East 1st will bring Southie a couple of exciting and much needed things including a brand new community center (YMCA) with an entire gym (and potentially a pool), a new daycare (hello Southie mothers!), a wellness center, as well as residential units and parking spaces.  The plan for the 8.5 million dollar development is being developed by South Boston residentGregg Donavan, and architect Holly Darzen.
Currently,  621 1st Street contains an 11,000 square foot concrete building on an 19,421 square feet plot of land.  The project calls for the usage of the 11,000 square foot building as well as an addition of 43,870 feet (adding 3 stories), for a total of 54,870 square feet of new development.  The structure will contain parking for 40 vehicles in the basement, a 13,411 square foot first floor used for a community center including a gymnasium, locker rooms, teen center, daycare, a wellness center and a reception area.  The second, third and fourth floors will contain 16 one bedroom units, 10 two bedroom units, and 2 three bedroom units.

Currently, there is a group of South Boston residents who are advocating for the YMCA to have a pool.  The group of residents has formed a Facebook page “We are Southie Supports the YMCA Pool and we need YOUR help” to share their progress, and ask for help from fellow residents.  They have been appealing to the BRA since the beginning of April, hoping to change the layout of the community center, adding a pool to their plan.  Over the next couple of weeks they will continue to write emails in support of the pool.  If you are a resident who is interested in bringing the YMCA pool to 621 East 1st Street then please join the Facebook group

We are Southie Supports the YMCA Pool and Need Your Help for more information, and help out by emailing the BRA of your request.
