Well, after push back from residents and businesses, it looks like General Electric has decided to use the helipad at Logan Airport. According to an article by Jon Chesto in the Boston Globe, GE has decided it doesn’t need a new helipad near their Fort Point headquarters. It seems as though executives think the commute from the airport through the Ted Williams Tunnel is a breeze.
Initially, a public helipad was used to “sweeten the pot” to lure GE to Boston.
So does that mean since GE isn’t interested, the new helipad plans are being tossed to the wayside? No, of course not. According to the article, John Barros, the city of Boston’s economic development chief, said they will still be looking for a location. From the Globe:
“We still believe that Boston should continue to consider a heliport … for its competitiveness and for attracting jobs to Boston. We’ve heard from a number of companies that have operations in Boston or are considering a move to Boston that a heliport is important.”
The article hints that the South Boston Waterfront location has not been completely ruled out either and still “presents possibilities.” So we shall see. You can read the full article in the Globe here!

Huge win for residents who attended the meetings and spoke out against using our tax dollars for a helipad. It was a reckless use of our time and public money—we’ve got our own public transit problems we should be finding real solutions to instead.
GE coming to Southie is huge ! We should build a heliport or anything else they want. GE And Reebok moving to Southie has helped the real estate values exponentially. Your son or daughter can someday work at a world class company. Stop attending meetings run by fake neighborhood associations and see the future of Southie. Starbucks on L street is additive to the neighborhood. So too would be a helipad. I recommend we put it at The corner of M & Broadway. We survived the Boston Edison for decades, what’s wrong with a City Point Heliport? think of it as the Southie Shuttle only in the air, and it won’t stop at bad restaurants.
City Point is a residential neighborhood, why should we have to take the burden of the heliport? We already have all the airplanes and the Ted. Build it on Beacon Hill ,there is a large plot of land on the corner of Park and Tremont St available . This is far from over. GE will push for back channel style, those elitist execs are not going to sit in the tunnel with the rest of us. Look for it to pass Friday of Labor Day #wonthebattlelostthewar
The GE Heliport will employ Southie residents. Just think of the opportunity to rub elbows with Jeff Immelt & GE execs at Starbucks on L Street prior to their take off from M &Broadway.
We had forced bussing and god knows we couldn’t stop that. The deal has been cut by the Mayor & GE. Which is good for the City. Resistance will Bring Forced Helicopters which will be worse that forced Busses. Stop attending Fake Neighborhood association meetings. GE invented the lightbulb, they bring good things to life. Instead of meals on wheels GE could carpet bomb Southie with meals from their helicopters for our elderly. Think outside the box, no wonder The Quencher shut done. Forward Thinking is the key to our future.
