Southie has it all!  Million dollar condos, some of the best restaurants around, light up swings and seesaws, and now we might be getting gondolas.

We wrote about it back in December.  One developer was proposing an aerial tram to relieve to the traffic nightmare in the Seaport District.

Millennium Partners – the developer behind the Millennium Tower and the Winthrop Square is proposing a tram system would run from South Station to the Seaport District of South Boston.  This system would be be able to transport nearly 15,000 people daily!

Well, according to the Boston Globe, developers of the new 1000 plus room Omni Hotel loves the idea too – especially since Millennium Partners have agreed to alter the route to swoop down and pick up and drop off guests of the hotel.  It seems that Omni too is concerned about the traffic (but honestly who isn’t) and thinks gondolas are a great idea!

The article also states that Congressman Stephen Lynch is also on-board with the proposal for an aerial tram too – especially the part that the gondola system would carry the equivalent of 40 buses per hour and addition reducing traffic and eliminating carbon emissions.

So looks like it’s one step closer to gondolas overhead.  The proposal still needs to get approval from the City of Boston and Massport.  So we shall see.

What do you think?

Hope it also stops at the new Edison development cause they will only have parking for half the number of units and hotel guests.

Well it could stop at the new Edison development…..if the enviromental regs, the longshore men, the neighbors, etc. weren’t doing everything in their power to slow the process. I bet it wont be done until 2025 or later. The cleanup alone will take 3+ years.

Maybe they could extend it out into the harbor and open the floor on say, every 5th carload? Its really crowded here and this could help!

Good idea..NEVER GONNA HAPPEN.!! Too expensive, the cost to go from point A to point B will negate this project.

This would make much more sense if it was from the Point to South Station, if you live in the Seaport and need to travel to South Station….go grab yourself a new pair of Nikes!

Byron: 100% right. By the time you wait, board, PAY, get off, walk to your specific Building, you could walk, bike a lot easier and CHEAPER! STUPID IDEA!

I think a great idea would be to revert everything to what it was. Bring back the crime, bring back the gangs and bring back Whitey! Those were the great, prosperous times.

Bring back the Pier. I used to play there when I was in a band. Great gig. There was also another great place on Broadway. Stage on the left when you come in and functions downstairs. Can’t remember the name but a fun crowd.

I agree, this is ridiculous. South Station to the Seaport?? People can’t make the 200-300 yard walk?

So the well healed part of town which has been around for ohh, a half a second, are getting their transit issues addressed with a multi million dollar Gondola idea (with maybe a second phase at some”later time” for the traditional South Boston Neighborhood which is code speak for never gonna happen there because people will just forget ). If this was happening in another part of town every politician from here to Worcester would be running to a podium crying foul over transit equity, the transit divide between traditional Southie and the ‘Rich people’ in the Seaport.
To the dozens of people at the bus stops each morning waiting for buses like it’s the cuban boat lift….”Let them have cake”!!!

Good point Eleanor, but it’s NEVER GONNA HAPPEN in either the SEAPORT or the neighborhood..thats what we need going down Broadway a GONDOLA ! Really?

Isn’t the Silver line a block from where the Omni is going in?

Good point, I believe there are 4 silver line stops in the Seaport.

They’re a bit old now. Tough to do a getaway on a Rascal.

From South Station extending to the Edison development (L Station Development) with multiple stops in the Seaport is an excellent idea. That’s about 1.5 to 2.0 miles in one direction

I am all for these fun transpiration ideas, but if you are going to invest in this make sure you make it practical and start at the Edison plant or out by castle island or something… from the Seaport to South Station seems like a missed opportunity.
