According to WCVB – Channel 5, Casper Funeral Home – a South Boston family run business providing funeral services for the past 85 years – has been storing bodies in an unlicensed facility.  Channel 5 investigates discovered a garage where bodies were stored in refrigerators on Tudor Street.

According to Casper’s website it claims it’s one of the most trusted funeral and cremation service providers in the state and describes the garage as a  “state-of-the-art” secure funeral refrigeration facility. The website also advertises the bargain price of $1395 for a cremation.

The investigation also goes on to report that during a recent recent surprise state inspection an investigator found “two bodies being processed in the unlicensed space. Twelve others were stashed in a refrigerator and there are no sprinklers or drains. The garage, which sits around the corner from the funeral home, was hot and cluttered.”  Good grief!

Shame on you for feeding into this bullshit. The Casper treat all their deceased with the kindest if care, and respect. Once the so called garage is liscensed there is no more story here,,

Evidently it is not licensed according to the State Inspector. I’m reporting a story based on an investigation. If it’s not true – then I’m sure the Casper’s will work it out.

If they had a surprise inspection and there was body stored in there then why have an anything been done so that tells me that obviously the states not worried about it

“Once the garage is licensed.” So it’s not, currently, licensed? Is that your position? That its ok to get a license after the fact and that makes up for all of this nonsense? Get a grip.

It is an issue…For a industry such as that and the building was not licensed.. it’s a complete disgrace..Bottom line is they got caught..

It has been my experience that the Casper family has been kind and considerate in dealing with families and their recently deceased loved ones. I hope for the best for all concerned.

Licenses are required so the city and state can get a fee.

My name is Ronald O’Bryan and to hear this disturbs me only because I know Joe Casper and David Casper as loving caring human beings who have helped my family and many other families that I know in their time of need with no question no denial and no hesitation to make their lives a little bit easier when they were at their worst not only do I find this hard to believe I will not believe it and neither should any of you reading this the Casper family has shown over and above kindness and thoughtfulness and heartfelt love this community could use a lot more people like them!

No one is doubting that the Casper’s give caring and loving service to Southie families. The story is about the fact they are operating part of the their business out of a unlicensed garage. A garage that is not licensed to perform funeral services. It’s an ethical issue and possibly a legal issue.

“Never say anything negative about anything in Southie. Ever.”

Great it’s 2017 and we’re still dealing with this mentality. Thank you for reporting this Maureen. If someone is doing something that isn’t right it should be reported. Especially when the issue is something as important as our lost beloved.

Casper’s Funeral Home has taken excellent care of my family over the years. My Mom, Grandmother, 2 brothers, 2 Sisters, My in laws, My brother in-law and Many friends. We would never have had them go anywhere else. They treated all of my family as if they were part of their family Joe and David Casper Thank you for everything you’ve done for my family. Don’t believe everything you hear that’s how rumors get started!!

Several of my family members were waked there. Never had a problem.my loved o es looked peaceful and everything else looked up to par.you didnt even finish your story.like were they fined or shut down?you wrote a half ass story about them storing bodies in an unlicensed garage. Hopefully this isnt true. If its just lack of license thats one thing but stories like this can destroy ones business.Did you speak to the funeral home themselves?

This post was a report on an investigation that was done by WCVB. According to the report the funeral home was reached out to but never responded to the request from Channel 5. More to follow.

Or a refrigerated storage facility. I have been there are know this funeral home.
Lies lies and a POOR job of Reporting.
This facility (garage) is all located on the same Casper property.

did you read the post? We did not do the investigating. WCVB did. Click the links in the post. Yes, the bodies were stored in a refrigerator in a garage. It was not a refrigerated storage facility. When the surprise inspection happened – there were two bodies being processed in the garage. The garage is not licensed for funeral services. There are no drains or sprinklers. More to follow.

Shame on you for repeating lines like “12 more stashes in a refrigerator.” What, like a Kenmore? Or maybe like a room designed for such work? Maybe, if you actually left the comfort of your laptop and walked all the way down there, you could find out for yourself, instead of repeating inflammatory verbage from somewhere else. Dave Casper handled my mother’s wake and funeral, and my uncle’s out-of-state -cremation with professionalism, empathy, and courtesy.

I am reporting on a story done by WCVB who did the investigation. Their investigation came upon documents that included a report by an inspector that included that verbiage. I will continue to report on all stories that relate to South Boston – good or bad. I am not making judgement on Casper Funeral Home.

Casper took care of both sisters and my brother and did such a wonderful job .
He also helped the family with finding less expensive alternatives and treated us with the utmost respect and dignity

It can be misleading to report what another news source says without seeing it for yourself so you know for sure the truth of the matter. Please follow up on your own by interviewing personally the Casper family. Don’t make the mistake of possibly ruining the reputation of a long time family business.

    My name is Jean Patts,
I was a resident of South Boston for 55 1/2 years and I’m calling B.S. on this one. Joe and David have handled alot of my families and friends wakes, funerals and cremations. All done with so much compassion and making sure the departed was given the dignity they deserved. I find your SO CALLED reporting deplorable , HELL you can get a parrot to do what you did. Do you want a cracker?
David I will be stopping by in the next two weeks to speak to you about my cremation as I have always planned on putting my final resting place in your (MORE THAN CAPABLE AND PROFESSIONAL) hands.
    Thank you.

This is my Dad… my Dad everyone. Peter Pereira.
This is what they “allegedly” did to his body after his death.
They threw him in a fridge, in a car-garage, in the middle of %*^#ing Boston. I am enraged. Words. Could. Not. Express.

My heart felt condolences. This hits close to home. I am furious after reading this article. My respect and trust for the company is gone. They had handled my loving grandmothers body and cremation. It was about a month or more before I received her ashes. This makes me sick! How can anyone defend these senseless people?! And on top of that not the first time they have had lawsuits filed against them. They cremated the wrong body before this incident!! I pray they are closed for good after all is said and done

  16. David Courage September 13, 2017 at 11:43 am - Reply

This story is BS. They could have referred to this building as storage building or a workshop, but “garage” is a lot more inflammatory.
They say bodies were “stashed in a refrigerator” which is more provocative than placed and stored. We have all seen morgues and funeral homes on TV, they also stash, or store bodies in refrigerators (That’s what you’re supposed to do…). They let a state license lapse. BFD.
I have seen much made about the great number of funerals Casper’s has done. The simple and obvious reason for that is because they treat the families with respect. NOT as cash cows to be taken advantage of at their most vulnerable time. ALSO this funeral home has buried many of our homeless population at their own expense.
The Casper family has handled the wakes and funerals for many of my loved ones. I have referred many of my friends when they had lost family members and had nowhere to turn. The Casper Family has always been a loving support, and has always treated us with the utmost honor dignity and respect.
I pray that this salacious report does not prevent them from continuing their wonderful work.
By the way, I plan on making an appointment to prepay my final services as a chance to support them, as they have always supported us.

Most of my family have been handled by the caspers, yes they got caught in a situation.Maybe over whelmed, but it was refrigerated system. Remember the caspers handle a lot of overdose cases on short notice and help families who don’t have the money to pay for a service on short notice. I would rather know have someone stored in Refrigerated facility and get some type of dignified service and closure for the family, than have them left over Boston medical and buried in some no name lot.

Should things get busy, we have a deep freezer in the cellar and another one for short people out in the shed. Reasonable rates.

I don’t understand why you are all saying shit to the woman who posted this!!!! Get your heads out of your asses. I’ve lived in South Boston all my life!!! Yes Casper’s has helped many, many families and friends. I have always had respect for them. Unfortunately, they have them on camera IN THE GARAGE!! Its being investigated and has been on local news stations!! I think it’s disgusting, would you approve of your loved ones stored in a garage or being prepared for viewing? I’m sure if tables were turned and a beloved family member were handled the same way, you would all be outraged and knowing most people from Southie would lay a beating on them!! We were all deceived by the Casper Family!! Even in death, people should be treated with dignity.

Maureen I saw this week’s ago on the news! As I started to read this, the ignorance of some of the people’s comments to you were harsh. Let them go to the State’s office and shoot them, they reported it first! Why hasn’t Casper’s come clean? Their lawyers aren’t even talking because it’s an ongoing investigation. They were caught preparing two bodies in the old red and white GARAGE that was once a cab company, by State Inspectors!!! Channel 5 and yourself are reporting what the State found and they call bullshit??? To the people with harsh comments, you’re trust is with Casper’s ask them to show you the garage!! Thank you Maureen for letting others know the updates in Southie!
