From our friends at Nutritious Navigation!
Happy New Year, friends! The feeling of “change” is in the air as we’re entering into a new month and a new year. We encourage you to never resist the opportunity to reflect on yourself and your state of health. (What could you be more consistent with? Is something missing?)
Try to resist the tendency to overhaul your life and put yourself in a “diet mode.” Diet mode can often feel restricting, which makes it pretty hard to sustain. Not everyone responds well to cutting out certain foods that are truly enjoyed. Your roommate may be on a diet that works for them, but it may not work for you! Flexible Dieting is not a new concept but certainly one that is getting more attention lately. It’s a step away from a calculated diet and a step towards putting you in the drivers seat. Flexible Dieting is an eating plan that allows for indulgences will still emphasizing healthy foods consistently. In a sense, if indulging is part of the plan, there is no need to feel “guilty” and stop all of your efforts completely.
It’s 3pm on a Tuesday and you’re at work. All of a sudden you hear that there’s cake for a co-worker’s birthday. Despite your best intentions, all you think about is that cake. So you have a piece…and you enjoy it! Then, you move on and try to avoid sabotaging the rest of the day. Of course, this wasn’t planned. The Flexible Dieting mindset says, enjoy the cake and try to limit other indulgences for the next few days.
In order for Flexible Dieting to work, there needs to be balance. Indulgent meals or snacks need to be balanced by nutritious meals and snacks. Sometimes, implementing a meal plan that allows for indulgences can be challenging. Meeting with a dietitian (like the dietitians at Nutritious Navigation!) to create a flexible plan that works for you is a great way to start. You’re the expert on YOU and dietitians are the experts on food and nutrition so together, there’s a formula for a realistic plan for YOU!
