Let’s hear it for Southie resident Shane Hoban who’s running not one but two road races to raise some money for kids with cancer in his grandfather’s honor!

For years, Hoban’s grandfather, Fred Perrone taught children how to use their hands and build as a woodshop teacher at East Junior High in Brockton and Holbrook High.  Two years ago, Perrone was diagnosed with prostate cancer and it has spread to his bones.  What better way to honor his grandfather than to raise some money for children battling cancer, so Hoban organized a Go Fund Me page for two charities – Dana Farber and Cops for Kids with Cancer.

Hoban and his girlfriend Kim Whiting will be running in the Emerald Society Boston Police Halfway to Saint Patrick’s Day 5K in Roslindale on September 11th and the Boston Firefighters Local 718 Memorial Road Race on October 16th.

“My grandfather is a wonderful man.  He is one the most loving kind people I know.”

In addition to teaching, Perrone loved riding his Harley, taking boat rides on Plymouth Harbor and has been happily married to his wife Ruth – also a former school teacher.

If you would like to make a donation, you can visit Hoban’s page here!

Way to go, Shane!  Good luck!

Beyond proud of my Son Shane, and his very special Girlfriend Kimmy. As soon as Shane told me his goal was to raise $5,000, in his Grandfather, my Father’s name, it touched my heart and my immediate response was this…….”That’s awesome, but in my eyes, you two already won, because for me, no dollar amount ever given ever beats a selfish act of kindness”.
