National Candy Corn Day – October 30th

Love ’em or hate ’em, this time of year the little triangle-shaped, yellow, orange and white candy resurface in candy dishes everywhere.  According to the National Confectioners Association, candy companies will produce nearly 35 million pounds of the corny candy this year. That’s about 9 billion individual kernels of corn.  This candy is made from corn syrup and although it is rich and sweet, it’s actually fat-free – so knock yourself yout!

Who knew?

Candy Corn comes in a variety of other colors and flavors depending on the holiday:

  • Brown, orange, and white Indian corn (the brown section is chocolate-flavored) for Thanksgiving
  • Green, white and red Reindeer corn for Christmas
  • Pink, red and white Cupid corn for Valentine’s Day
  • Pastel-colored Bunny corn for Easter

The facts:

  • George Renniger of Wunderlee Candy Company invented the candy corn in the 1880’s.
  • The Goelitz Candy Company started making candy corn in 1900 and still make it today.
  • The process for making candy corn back in the day was so tedious and time consuming that they only sold it from March until October.
  • Today, machines do all the work – manufacturers use the “corn starch molding process”

It’s Halloween – and Candy Corn is the unofficial candy of Halloween –  so grab a bag and celebrate! Eat them till you get sick!
