Southie Wildlife

It's not every day you see a Red-Tailed Hawk in Southie.  Seagulls and pigeons? Sure.  Even an occasional sighting of a turkey.  But seeing a Red-Tailed Hawk is enough to stop you in your tracks.  Southie resident and avid photographer, Eileen Murphy shot this photo of a Red-Tailed Hawk perched on the mast of the Missing Star - a sailboat that got beached near Kelly's Landing on Day Boulevard.

The scoop:
Red-tailed Hawks are usually found in grassland or marsh-shrub habitats, but it not completely uncommon for one of these hawks to be spotted in an urban area where there are high perches and lots of park area - a description that fits the Farragut Road area of Day Boulevard.  Red-tailed Hawks are carnivores and Marine Park is filled with squirrels so you may see one in this area of South Boston.

So keep your eyes open, Southie.  You might just spot a hawk.

Special thank you to Eileen Murphy for sharing her photo.

They've been on the steeple of the former St. Augustine's for a few years now.  I see them up the Heights too.  It's great watching them in action.
