Over 37 families gathered on a gloomy Sunday to spread some love and cheer and brighten the day of the Boston firefighters.

What began as a simple gesture as a way for the South Boston Youth Hockey League to give thanks to the Boston firefighters, quickly blossomed into more than 100 people participating in true Southie spirit.    Traveling by bus and trolley, the group made stops at  Engine 2 and Ladder 19 (K Street), Engine 39 and Ladder 18 (D Street) and then to Engine 33 and Ladder 15 (Boylston Street).  At each firehouse, a child expressed condolences on behalf of the league and presented the firefighters with a basket filled with goodies.

Fourth grader John Gilmartin spoke at K Street.  Jerry O’Neil, 8, did the honors at D Street and Sean Hartford, 11, closed at Boylston Street.  Flowers were presented by third grader Brennah Hynes.  Ally Antonelli, a student at Boston Latin School, sang the National Anthem and was joined by the entire group singing God Bless America.

A special thanks to John Picariello and Leanne Burke for organizing the trip.  Bus service was donated by Cavalier Bus Lines and trolley donated by Old Town Trolley.  Sullivan’s generously provided burgers after the trip!

Today was an Unbelievable Experience to see the kids showing love to these Heroes. Seeing the Firefighters choke back tears was extra moving. So proud to be part of S.B. Youth Hockey
