A little lesson in wine
Our good friends at Social Wines (52 West Broadway) would like to school us in Godello. Enjoy!
Something we love to do at Social Wines is bring under-appreciated wines to the forefront and hopefully introduce customers to something new. (At how many stores do you see 17 different Gruner Veltliners?) A great summer white wine we're loving right now that fits this category is Godello.
A Spanish varietal from the northwest of Spain, Godello hails from Galicia - a region known for Albarino. There’s a small sub-region of Galicia called Valdeorras which translates to “valley of gold”. The Romans mined for gold here but what I really think they were looking for was Godello! A few years later in the late 1970’s farmers started planting more Godello, and we couldn't be happier they did.
Godello is usually aged in stainless steel, although you can find some aged in oak. All of our Godello's take the stainless route; they're mouth-filling with a bit of weight to them, and have flavors of apples, citrus, tropical fruits and pears. There's crisp acidity and pleasant minerality. Enjoy Godello with seafood dishes, grilled or roasted chicken, or our favorite - grilled octopus with a sprinkle of paprika. If you're just relaxing on a hot summer night, have some while kicking-back with a plate of your favorite cheeses and cured meats.
Our Godello's range in price from $15 to $20, including one that’s organic.
