The bucket list
We hate to be a Debbie Downer, but with August off to a quick start, we want to make sure you savor every moment and cross off items on your summer bucket list. Here are some fun things we're hoping to do in the month of August:
Indulge in Yoberry! Finally, a new spot in town to enjoy a frozen treat. This newly opened frozen yogurt shop has many flavors and toppings to choose from it will please everyone's taste buds. We can't wait to taste the Southie Swirl - choose a frozen yogurt flavor and pick three of your favorite toppings and they swirl it together. Yoberry also has Smoothies and Milk Shakes. They are open daily from 11am-11pm.
Pack a picnic! We know we can picnic in fall too but we want to take advantage of a late sunset with a summer's night picnic. Our preferred spots for a picnic? Fort-side at Castle Island or up high at Thomas Park. Stop by American Provisions for some sandwiches or charcuterie and gourmet cheeses. Social Wines will help you pair a nice wine to make your picnic a little more romantic.
Thrill seek! Take a ride on Codzilla! If whipping around Boston Harbor at full speed is your idea of a fun way to spend an afternoon, Codzilla is the perfect adventure for you. In this high-speed ride, the music blares, the waves crash, and this forty minute ride featuring 2800 horsepower is not for the faint of heart. We are dying to try it! You can board Codzilla daily June 23 - September 3 at 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM & 6:00 PM. Tickets will run you about $27. Watch! Take advantage of the free movies at the Boston Harbor Hotel. This month they are featuring blockbuster films from 1987 - right up our alley! Each summer the harborside terrace is transformed into an outdoor cinema under the stars from June through August. The movie begins at sunset and are free and open to the public. We recommend getting their a little early to find a spot.
- Aug. 10: "Moonstruck"
- Aug. 17: "Planes, Trains, & Automobiles"
- Aug. 24: "Dirty Dancing"
- Aug. 31: "Roxanne"
Sightsee! Take a tour of Fort Independence at Castle Island. You've seen it every time you go out to Sully's for a cheeseburger. Why not get a little history lesson? The CIA gives tours on Saturdays and Sundays from 12noon to 3:30pm. The Castle Island Association is a historical committee whose purpose is to preserve the rich history of Castle Island.
Ride a bike! Don't let your bike collect dust in your hallway. Call MyBike and take advantage of their concierge service. The bike experts at MyBike will have your bike tuned up in no time and you can take to the streets for ride. MyBike, 516 East Second Street 617-202-9720 (mybikeonline.com)
Drink! We hear Empire on the waterfront is quite the place. With dramatic decor and a bevy of beautiful people in attendance, Empire has proven to be a summer hot spot. We want to mix and mingle and partake in one of their oversized drinks. The Crouching Tiger is a sweet concoction of Stoli Blueberi, Bacardi Select 151, Pineapple and Sour. Hidden Dragon is made of Stoli Razz, Stoli Ohranj, Captain Black, Orange, Pineapple, Cherry. Each serves four and costs $44.
Shape up! We realize that summer is just about gone and that hope for sporting that bikini on M Street Beach this year might be a lost cause - but it's never too late. Thomas Regan of Motivated Fitness will have you whipped into shape in no time. With plenty of machines, classes and boot camps, Thomas can customize a workout for you that might even have you bathing suit ready by Labor Day. 315 West Broadway, 617-269-5555
New do! Wash and go! Nurture is offering a special for the month of August for the budget conscious. Instead of a wash, cut and blowdry, stop in for a wet cut. Shampoo, conditioner and a fabulous cut for only $28! Just think, the summer heat will have that hair dry in no time! (* Offer good with select sylists only. Call for details - 617-269-0638).
Shop Al Fresco! The thrill is in the hunt! You never know what you might find at SoWa Open Market. With rows and rows of artisans and vendors, and farmers market, you never know what treasures your might discover. Shop in the fresh air and grab a bite to eat at one of the food trucks. It's a delightful way to spend a summer Sunday. SoWa Open Market happens every Sunday through October from 10am-4pm. (460 Harrison Ave.) For more information: http://www.sowaopenmarket.com/
