American

I had my monthly supper club night last Wednesday with my good friends Amy and Paula.  We decided to venture down to A Street to Southie’s newest eating and drinking establishment Barlow’s.

Barlow’s is a new American-style restaurant owned and operated by the same people that brought you the Warren Tavern in Charlestown.

The interior is spacious and beautiful with its exposed brick and beams, and oversized windows.  The walls display unique artwork from local artists and the overall feeling of the decor is contemporary and upscale yet the ambiance is lively and inviting.

The sleek bar in the center of the large dining room was packed with an eclectic crowd of young and old.  There was a 25 minute wait for a table, so we ventured to the bar to order a cocktail.  All three of us ordered a Pomegranate Martini – which was crisp and delicious and it was for the bargain price of $9.  In less than 25 minutes, the host found us and ushered us to our table.

The menu at Barlow’s is extensive but not overwhelming.   Barlow’s offers traditional American fare with items ranging from salads, to burgers, to fish, steak and pasta dishes.  We decided to split two salads for an appetizer.  We ordered the Red Pear and Sundried Cranberry Chopped Salad and the Roasted Beet Salad.  They both were delicious and fresh.  The Spiced maple vinaigrette on the Red Pair Salad was sweet and tasty.  And the lemon-thyme dressing on the Beet Salad was light and refreshing.

For the main course, I had the Butternut Squash Ravioli.   It was rich and creamy and delicious.  Amy had the Tuna and said it was excellent.  Paula ordered the steak tips and although tender and cooked perfectly, they lacked flavor and were slightly disappointing.

For dessert, we had the Cookie Dough Ice Cream with Shortbread Cookies.  It was like a little bowl of heaven.

When the bill arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by the total.  We split the bill three ways, and including tip, we each paid $55 for two cocktails, salad, entree and dessert.  Not bad for a night out with the girls!

We enjoyed our night at Barlow’s.  Our waiter was friendly and helpful.  He informed us that he lives in Southie and that lots of Southie people are starting to come in to the restaurant.  He also informed us of Barlow’s outdoor patio that will open in the spring.  We are looking forward to cocktails on the patio in May!

I will definitely go back to Barlow’s!  The food was delicious, the cocktails were perfectly mixed, the staff was friendly and eager to please and the decor is beautiful.  Welcome to Southie Barlow’s!  Check it out for yourself!
