One Southie resident’s creation
For us, we are classic, orange safety cone when it comes to saving a spot after a snow storm in Southie. For others, they may go the beach chair, trash can or milk crate route. Maybe even an old keg of beer or an ironing board will do the trick. But for this Southie resident, she saw a work of art in a neighbor’s space saver.
“This was my first winter here and I was blown away with how the area (mostly) bonded together to persevere our record snow fall,” says Southie resident Edwina Drummond Boose. Edwina is an interior designer and when she spied her neighbor’s maple ladder back chair, she knew she could transform it into something more. As a participant in Take a Seat – a fundraiser for the Women’s Institute for Housing and Development sponsored by the International Furnishings and Design Association of New England (IFDA) and Builders Association of Boston (BAGB) – she was on the lookout for the perfect chair.
The idea is for designers to make or reclaim a chair and create into something beauty that will be auctioned off for the charity. She found that perfect chair atop a greying mound of snow in South Boston. It belonged to her neighbor across the street, so she left a note on his windshield asking if she could have his chair. We would have to imagine he was pleasantly surprised to find a note of that caliber that day – and he happily agreed to give the chair to Edwina.
“I painted it silver, upholstered it in lambs fur, put fringe around the seat edge that looks like icicles, and put rhinestones on top ladder that say 110.6″ – which represents our total, record breaking snowfall! What was once a sad, chair destined for the landfill, has become a beautiful, positive symbol of the difficult winter that we all endured! For me, it represents coming together as a community and creating a positive outcome for many women and children in need.”
