Wine and Dine
Barlow’s
241 A St
I had my monthly supper club night last Wednesday with my good friends Amy and Paula. We decided to venture down to A Street to Southie’s newest eating and drinking establishment Barlow’s.
Barlow’s is a new American-style restaurant owned and operated by the same people that brought you the Warren Tavern in Charlestown. The interior is spacious and beautiful with its exposed brick and beams, and oversized windows. The walls display unique artwork from local artists and the overall feeling of the décor is contemporary and upscale yet the ambiance is lively and inviting.
The sleek bar in the center of the large dining room was packed with an eclectic crowd of young and old. There was a 25 minute wait for a table, so we ventured to the bar to order a cocktail. All three of us ordered a Pomegranate Martini – which was crisp and delicious and it was for the bargain price of $9. In less than 25 minutes, the host found us and ushered us to our table.
The menu at Barlow’s is extensive but not overwhelming. Barlow’s offers traditional American fare with items ranging from salads, to burgers, to fish, steak and pasta dishes. We decided to split two salads for an appetizer. We ordered the Red Pear and Sundried Cranberry Chopped Salad and the Roasted Beet Salad. They both were delicious and fresh. The Spiced maple vinaigrette on the Red Pair Salad was sweet and tasty. And the lemon-thyme dressing on the Beet Salad was light and refreshing.
For the main course, I had the Butternut Squash Ravioli. It was rich and creamy and delicious. Amy had the Tuna and said it was excellent. Paula ordered the steak tips and although tender and cooked perfectly, they lacked flavor and were slightly disappointing.
For dessert, we had the Cookie Dough Ice Cream with Shortbread Cookies. It was like a little bowl of heaven.
When the bill arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by the total. We split the bill three ways, and including tip, we each paid $55 for two cocktails, salad, entrée and dessert. Not bad for a night out with the girls!
We enjoyed our night at Barlow’s. Our waiter was friendly and helpful. He informed us that he lives in Southie and that lots of Southie people are starting to come in to the restaurant. He also informed us of Barlow’s outdoor patio that will open in the spring. We are looking forward to cocktails on the patio in May!
I will definitely go back to Barlow’s! The food was delicious, the cocktails were perfectly mixed, the staff was friendly and eager to please and the décor is beautiful. Welcome to Southie Barlow’s! Check it out for yourself!

Flour Bakery is a relative new-comer to the Southie/Fort Point area (within the last couple years), and I was excited to find they had a location close by when I moved from the South End to Southie about 4 years ago.
My favorite item on the menu is the Breakfast egg sandwich! It is by-far the BEST breakfast sandwich I have had, and believe me, I’ve had MANY! I love me some egg sandwich! The sandwich consists of a super fluffy egg, covered in aged sharp cheddar, two thick slices of smoked bacon, and topped with Arugula and a tangy/slightly spicy mustard aioli and served on a fresh baked roll. ….soooo good…and the perfect hang-over remedy!
Their other specialties include, crusty, crackling baguettes warm from the steaming oven ... buttery, raisin-filled brioche shaped in a swirl and drizzled with sweet icing ... silky-smooth double chocolate truffle tarts ... lemon curd cakes filled with raspberry preserves...fresh, made-to-order salads and sandwiches, as well as prepared dinners to go. All made FRESH in-house every day! They also take orders for Holiday parties and can make platters to order for everything you may need, breakfast/brunch- lunch and dinner.
To quote their web-site, “Everything is prepared in-house by our professional kitchen staff. Our business includes morning commuters stopping in for breakfast, area employees and neighbors enjoying lunch, friends meeting for coffee and talk, office workers seeking to satisfy their 4pm sugar craving, people picking up bread, salad, or dessert for their evening meal.”

Don’t worry! Be happy! – My Trip on the Amrheins’
“No Worries” Shuttle
By Maureen Dahill
A few months ago, on the windshield of my Volvo, I found one of those phony parking tickets. Normally such scare-tactic marketing tools aggravate me beyond belief but this time I was pleasantly surprise by its contents. I kept the orange postcard and stored it away for a rainy day – or in my case a cold winter Saturday late afternoon with not much to do. My friend Megan and I were in a bit of a rut. We wanted to go out somewhere for a few cocktails and some appetizers. It was too cold to walk anywhere. and we didn’t want to drive for fear of losing the treasured parking spot. So without hesitation, I ran for the orange ticket in my pocketbook.
“Let’s go to Amrheins!” I shouted. I called the number on the card and told them what time I wanted to be picked up. A little bit later my cell phone rang and I was told the shuttle would be there to pick us up in 5 minutes. We put on our coats and before the five minutes were up, my doorbell rang.
Our very handsome driver Jimmy Mulrey greeted us and then escorted us to a large white van with the words “Amrheins No Worries” shuttle boldly printed on the side. He opened the door for us like a gentleman and announced we would be at Amrheins momentarily. The interior of the van was spacious and comfortable and very clean. There were menus for us to look over while Jimmy drove us safely to our destination. Jimmy made us some friendly recommendations about the menu and also informed us that if we needed a ride back home or any other destination in South Boston to let our server know 10 minutes before we wanted to go.
When we asked Jimmy what type of person was taking the shuttle, he informed us that he had been receiving lots of pick-up and drop-offs from all the local hotels but the real inspiration for the “No Worries” shuttle was the Southie resident who didn’t want to drive or lose their parking spot. The exact reason we were taking it!
Before we arrived at our destination I needed to mail a stack of Christmas cards and get some cash from the ATM. I asked Jimmy if he would mind making a few stops, and he - being the gentleman that he is - said, “Sure, not a problem.” We promptly went to the Mt. Washington Bank and then a quick trip to the post office. A few blocks later, we were pulling into the parking lot of Amrhein’s on West Broadway.
Jimmy opened the door for us, helped us out and reminded us again to let our server know 10 minutes before we wanted to leave. We thanked Jimmy and headed inside the restaurant. I have a feeling I’m gonna be taking the shuttle a lot this winter! You should too! (See my review of our dining experience too!)
The “no worries” shuttle is complimentary but tips are welcome.

Dining at Amrheins
Located on the city-side part of town, one block from Broadway station is Amrheins a local fixture in South Boston since 1890. Amrheins is the proud home of the oldest hand carved bar in America and still has the first Draft Beer pump in Boston on display. But what makes Amrheins special is the inviting traditional décor, the friendly staff and the amazingly delicious food. And now with the addition of its “No Worries” shuttle, you have no excuse not to go.
After we were dropped safely at the door by the shuttle, my friend Megan and I decided to sit bar-side and share a few appetizers, small plates and drinks. The bar was already in full swing with a lively Saturday early evening crowd. We sat at a high top table and immediately greeted by our server – who was very friendly and very sweet. She took our drink order as we looked over the extensive menu featuring traditional American cuisine and comfort food. The menu is reasonably priced – appetizers ranging from $5 -$ 12 and entrees from $16 - $25.
When our drinks arrived, we ordered our food. We chose the Chicken Tenders, the Buffalo Chicken Dip and the Sweet and Spicy Calamari. Everything was fresh and delicious. The Chicken Tenders were all white meat chicken lightly friend to a golden brown and served with a really great honey mustard dipping sauce. The Buffalo Chicken Dip which is shredded chicken in a buffalo sauce mixed with three types of cheeses and served with tortilla chips was spicy and super-good – I could not stop eating it! The calamari was both crispy and tender and tossed in a sweet chilled sauce - so delicious.
We ordered another round of drinks and enjoyed conversation and friendly faces that filled the bar.
When we were ready to go, we told our server and by the time we paid the check, the shuttle was waiting for us to take us to our next destination. Nothing could be more convenient!
We had such a fun night we are planning to go back with a group for dinner and we’ll be taking the “No Worries” shuttle for sure!
